Infrastructure and Services - There is a Difference
Anyone can resell commodity hosting services and pack your site or applications on a shared server with who knows how many other accounts. But when it comes to critical infrastructure, your business needs dedicated or managed services and an experienced network engineer. How do you know what you're getting?
Here are some questions to ask.
- Is your 'web guy' hosting DNS, web, database and email all on the same server?
- Is your contact person an experienced network engineer or administrator?
- Do you have secure, out-of-band, management access access to your servers via VPN?
- Do you have secure, KVM over IP to your servers via VPN?
- How redundant is your provider's DNS?
- How many and what kind of peering relationships does your provider have?
- Does your provider have multiple points of presence?
- What kind of SLA (Service Level Agreement) does your provider offer?
